Beginner’s Blackwork Tulip Class Info

Blackwork came to England from Spain with Catherine of Aragon in 1501. Its diaper patterns originated from intricate Moorish patterns which were made up of intricately designed, interlaced geometric shapes. It was widely used during the Tudor period on clothing, particularly on cuffs and collars, where it was worked to be the same on both sides of the fabric.

This Beginner’s Blackwork class will run on Saturday 26th November from 10am – 4pm and costs £50. Only 10 spaces are available to ensure each student gets lots of attention! Five diaper patterns will be covered, as well as transfer of design, seeding and stem stitch. This is an excellent grounding for then moving onto the next stage!

The blackwork kits for this class cost £20 each and include all materials required. You will need to bring ring frame (ideally hands free) and embroidery scissors. A needle threader, magnifier and daylight lamp may also be useful. A materials list can be provided if you prefer not to purchase a kit – please ask when booking.

Beginner’s Silk Shading Class Info

Silk shading is often referred to as painting with a needle, as the finished embroidery can look just like a painting. Its origins date back hundreds of years. The term ‘silk shading’ covers two stitching techniques known as ‘silk shading’ where the stitches follow the curves and direction of the design and ‘tapestry shading’ where the stitches are worked straight up or down. Emphasis is on blending of threads and tonal colour using long & short stitch, although split stitch was originally used.

This Beginner’s Silk Shading class will run on Thursday 13th October from 10am – 4pm and costs £50. Only 10 spaces are available to ensure each student gets lots of attention! You will be taught how to prepare your fabric for working, how to prepare each area of the design with split stitch first, how to work long & short stitch in tapestry shading and the correct order of working the design to result in the best finished effect. This will give you an excellent grounding for then moving on to the next stage – directional silk shading and blending of colours!

The silk shading kits for this class cost £25 each and include all materials required. You will need to bring a hands free ring frame (min 20cm diameter) and embroidery scissors. A thimble, needle threader, magnifier and daylight lamp may also be useful. A materials list can be provided if you prefer not to purchase a kit – please ask when booking.

Beginner’s Goldwork Class Info

Goldwork has been used extensively over the centuries on ecclesiastical vestments, as well as on military uniforms, flags and banners. During the late 12th and mid 14th centuries the artisans of England produced particularly excellent embroidered work using silk and gold threads. This period was known as Opus Anglicanum.

This Beginner’s Goldwork class will run on Monday 5th December from 10am – 4pm and costs £50. Only 10 spaces are available to ensure each student gets lots of attention! You will be taught how to apply padding using felt, when to wax your thread, how to use and couch three different types of gold metal thread and how to use cutwork.

The goldwork kits for this class cost £30 each and include all materials required. You will need to bring a hands free ring frame (min 20cm diameter), embroidery scissors and tweezers. A thimble, needle threader, magnifier and daylight lamp may also be useful. A materials list can be provided if you prefer not to purchase a kit – please ask when booking.
